Digger Deeper: The Reason Behind Emotional Outbursts

Many parents ask us questions regarding behavior and emotional outbursts. Understanding typical development can help us understand our children better.

In typically developing children, the emotional center of their brain is fully developed by the age of 2-3 years old. The part that assists in controlling the emotional center is not fully developed until approximately the mid-late 20s. This means that our little ones are experiencing big emotions very early on and are not sure what they are feeling or how to manage their emotions.

This is one of the reasons why some people describe toddlerhood as "terrible two's and three's". It can be a very frustrating and challenging time for parents, however, keeping our child's developmental stages in mind can help put things into perspective.

When you accept that emotional outbursts/tantrums are a part of typical childhood development it can help you react more calmly. Toddlerhood is a time of so much fun growth and development- it does not need to seem terrible!
